Bathroom and kitchen ideas please :)

Howdy !
I've just moved into my new flat . Kitchen and bathroom manky .
Not having windows in either room isn't really inspiring either .
I have a few thousand to spend, but don't want to go mad .
So I'll start with kitchen first : I want to replace the worktop/ sink / flooring and cabinet doors .
There is a company that can do it all within a couple of days , as I'm not having a new kitchen . I'd imagine it'd be carpet right for rubber flooring ?
Bathroom : The head height for the bath / shower is not the greatest .
If I was Ronnie Corbett I'd have no problems .
It is totally manky
The tiling is a cream colour , but the border tiles are more depressing than an eastenders omnibus .navy blue &white ugh!
I hear tile paint . Mixed reviews. If it's not too expensive to get avtiler in and redo the tiling in the bathroom I will listen .
The flooring : again rubber from carpet right ?
Want new sink and toilet .
New valve is needed according to surveyor .
I'm gonna paint the rest of the flat, and will post another thread about privacy etc.
Basically , the previous occupants were unclean and rancid .
Please reply with any ideas you may have . Easter is around the corner, so hoping for bargains.
Thanks

Try having a look in Homebase or similar and get a few ideas together. You've got so many questions, but all of them boil down to your personal choices.0

You can get a roll of lino or sticky lino tiles (very easy to use, just put them in my kitchen) from b&q.
Have a look in Ikea for new worktop, sink and cupboard doors. They do plain white doors which are cheap and look OK, providing your base units are ok.
Tile paint i have used in the kitchen which was successful, but i would rather re-tile if i had the money. Not sure how well it would work in the bathroom.
If you have a few ££££ to spend, i would get professionals in to do the things you can't do, and gradually do the rest yourself.0 -
A kitchen without a window? Does it have a vent at least? My first concern would be how to introduce light to the room.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. diy-kitchens.com is a great site for your doors.
Just ordered mine in luca gloss in two different colours.
They have a showroom in yorkshire which you can visit all day helping yourself to their delightful drinks and snacks, whilst you order using the computers they have there or order at home,no hassle whatsoever but someone on hand if you need it.
They even have a display of 5 cabinets from Howdens,b and q etc to show the difference in quality, plus theirs are rigid built at cheaper prices.
I dont know what you are like at diy,but replacing doors is easy enough to do,ill be doing mine myself,Im a tight yorkshire lass and like to muck in especially if it saves money.0 -
Try www.houzz.com
It's a very extensive home design website with over 110000000 images and a very effective search function.
Well worth a look for ideasEat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Definitely recommend DIY Kitchens- we have just fitted a kitchen from them and the quality is excellent. Their customer service is spot on too. We are lucky to live near their showroom & have enjoyed free meals cooked by their chef in the show kitchen. No pushy sales and free grub!0

Can I make a suggestion?
I'm guessing this won't be your forever home? So, with the kitchen (won't work in a bathroom!), why not go for free-standing items that could go with you when you move? eg kitchen dresser, kitchen table, butcher block, etc. You can use the table like a work top, and also for eating. We still have the table that we bought second hand for our free-standing kitchen nearly 20 years ago when we had no money. We've had 8 houses since then, and it has now been relegated to the boot room - but it still looks good, and it's still useful. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Thanks for all of your help so far

I painted the hallway , a couple of days ago.
I'm going to paint the kitchen tomorrow . It will be painted white.
The kitchen has a vent .
On closer inspection , the cabinets don't look too sad . I may only get new handles . The worktop and sink/taps will have to be replaced.
I'm thinking that , if I have a white worktop, and the sink is replaced, it will make a big difference .
I think vinyl flooring is the way to go.
Kitchen is 12'8"x 5'8"
Bathroom : most depressing room of all.
It is part tiled .
I was gonna get a quote from rated people for the job listed below.
I've sent email to gas co.( who do shower design / installation) , to see what they say first.
If the job is less than £5k then I will be happy :
Replace toilet and sink/taps
Rip out bath /shower and put small walk in shower instead
Possible tiling /,retiling on wall,
Possible floor tiling ( lots of possibles;))
Bathroom is 9'3"x 6'8"

Thanks for that
I assume all doors are universal ? ( the foldout Internal hinges )0 -
Don't know what light levels you have in that kitchen - ie with no window?
So - maybe doing summat about the lighting?
Don't know what the ceiling light is? I'd be thinking a set of spotlights up there personally.
Do you have under cabinet lighting? If not - I don't think that element of my new kitchen I've just had finished cost that much of the total cost. Maybe, say, £200 or so should get an electrician in to fix up a bit of under-cabinet lighting for you?0
