Ovo & EDF Smart Meters
Hi All,
I'm currently with Ovo and my fixed contract finishes this month & have received my renewal notice.
I had a shock when I calculated that OVO's prices have gone up by approx 23% - especially as "The Big Six" price increases are nowhere near that level.
As a result I have decided that I will switch to EDF after doing a comparison on this site. We have had Smart Meters fitted by Ovo and when I spoke with EDF, it appears that Ovo's & EDF's systems aren't compatible, so we'll be back to giving manual readings.
This isn't a problem as such, but is it common? The lady at EDF said they will fit their own Smart meters instead once we've switched. Will the same thing happen next year should I switch again to a better deal?
Somebody somewhere must be making a fortune if each time you switch, you need new Smart meters due to incompatibility. No wonder prices are going up!
Anyone else experienced this?
Thanks and all the best

First generation smart meters are mainly supplier dependent. My advice would be to wait until next year when the next generation of smart meters are released. If EDF installs another first generation meter then it just adds a further £400 plus to our energy bills. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hengus, can you stop that sort of rubbish scare tactics please.Coming out with guff like that is ridiculous ! (its costing us £400 on our energy bills lol )You may as well say "our energy bills are increasing " with just about everything the suppliers do with a cost to it, including changing every meter, smart or dumb, and every possible problem call centres have to deal with. Are you now a fully paid up member of StopsmartmetersUK ? You have no idea how much it will cost to upgrade SMET1 to SMET2 neither . It could be very cheap with just a quick Hub upgrade.First generation smart meters are mainly supplier dependent. I d like to add that the thief I caught last month had stolen thousands of pounds worth of energy fiddling both gas and electric meters (EDF user ) which using your example is "adding thousands to our energy bills " and he of course was a firm anti smart meter and a refuser of the new technology.. All the energy thieves are anti smart meter of course.Every person who home grows cannabis is a strong anti smart meter candidate and many of the Stopsmartmeter brigade will be home growers that is why they are shouting the loudest .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thank you one and all.
Thanks for the link footguy - never noticed that on the Ovo website. Looks like I need to find out how to manually read both my Smart Meters for both KWH or Units (cubic metres) for gas and KWH for electric.
There are about a dozen buttons on the front of each meter and I'm not sure what to press. Info never came with the meters - only for the remote display. From reading the above Ovo link, it seems that will also be redundant when I switch . . .
If anyone is familiar with manually reading Smart meters - escpecially the Ovo types, please let me know.

Sorry - should have Googled first before asking the question. Found the info on the Ovo website.
I would post the link in case someone else found it useful, but being a new member, I'm unable to post links.
Cheers
