Problem with home insurance, help please

Hi
I have recently sold my house and bought another. The new house needed some improvements before I move in.
I rang my insurance, the Post Office and explained the situation and they told me they had changed the policy to include contents on both my old and new property and buildings insurance on the new property. They said this could be done for a short time and to ring them on the 1st October to clarify if I have moved.
Today I have rang them to be told that there has been no cover on my old property which is where all of my belongings, valuables are.
They have now said they can't insure my old property without a 12 month contract even though I am moving in 3 weeks.
I'm so angry, if they had told me this in the beginning, i would have found other insurance as I wouldn't live here with no insurance.

Can anyone help me as to where I would find a company who would provide contents insurance for 3-4 weeks until I move without having to take out a years policy.

Thanks
Jules

Did you get the name of the person.
Do you have the time and date of the call?

If not then in future I would get this information and write it down AND ask for confirmation in writing.
If you have this detail then it means there is a possibility of retrieving a recorded call but also it helps to substantiate complaints.
As you say it's very important to be insured so you can't leave this sort of thing to chance, you need it confirmed in writing.

Will they be able to change the address in 3 weeks?

Well it's a little be cheeky but you could get one that allows a full refund if you cancel within 14 days and do it twice.
A bit of hassle and somewhat cheeky but if the industry gives you no choice then it's fair game in my view.

Bear in mind that you can't retrospectively claim.
i.e. if you cancel the policy and then find something was accidentally damaged then you won't be able to claim.

The best best would be to find a policy that allows you to alter it after the 3 weeks.

Have you thought about talking to an insurance broker as they specialise in this and therefore might be able to help.

How long do you have left on the Post Office insurance?

If it's not too long why don't you just let it run on and meanwhile take out a new insurance elsewhere for your old property (can be done immediately on line), transferring that to you new property when you move. At that point you'd need to cancel your Post Office insurance as you can't have 2 insurances for the same cover on one property.
