They can claim the money back from Paypal.

They wont ever claim the money back from paypal, as they will never pay it to them in the first place.

You'll get an email alleging to be from paypal saying they have received the money and are holding it for you until the car is picked up (or some similar rouse) but it wont be from paypal.

OR - they'll "over pay you" and need you to send them some of the money back, direct from your bank account to theirs.

You should just go along with them and see what happens if your interested.

What will likely happen is that they will send you an email which looks like it has come from PayPal saying that you have received the money and they hope that you will not look in your account and just agree to let them collect the car.

They may also put something in the email saying the money is being held by PayPal until the good are confirmed to be delivered to explain why you can't see the money in your account.

    ^^^^^^^^
    This. Totally.

I had a similar scam to buy old iphone. I knew it was a scam and strung him along but lost him. I was going to send my old Nokia in a box filled with confetti or maybe something less....nice.

String the along as long as you can with a fake email. Send them round the houses to collect the car. Maybe get a toy car?
