Does allowing the gas to run out affect the boiler

Hi all

Basically this is what happened yesterday and the outcome

We have a pre-payment gas meter
So on Friday around midday the gas went and we didn't top it up till yesterday morning as was out. We came back out and the boiler was flashing F1 (it does this when there's no gas)

So topped up the gas card put it in and it said £20 gas.
I came in pressed the reset boiler and it started up then stopped and started flashing F1 again. So tried to reset it a few more times and the same thing was happening.

So I called the landlord. He came round messed with pressure nobs etc. He called out the boiler man he came out said about new part was needed then he went out to the gas meter came back in said he let air out the pipes and said don't let the gas run out as that is what is affecting the boiler. To keep the meter constantly topped up as it's affecting the boiler

I personally have never heard of this before that when a gas meter runs out it damages a part in the boiler and that part has to be replaced.

I have lived in several properties and never come across this happening before.

Can anyone explain this

There was a thread on here some years ago about this which suggested that the issue is to do with the meter and its safety interlock. The logic being that the gas runs out and someone has left the oven on. The worst case scenario is that the occupant tops up the meter but has forgotten about the oven. There was something that needed to be done to get the gas to flow.
