It's definitely my meter as it's inside my flat and when i turn the switch off all the power goes off. I cant put a photo up for some reason even to show you but I got a video too of the light flashing when the electricity was switched off. I will contact First Utility asap.

And say what? You need to work out your consumption. Looking at a flashing LED for a day is not the answer. Take a meter reading and see how much electricity you are using per day. Your supplier will not send out an electrician just to check your meter. It will ask you to run consumption tests. It will also advise you that if a potential meter fault is investigated, then you will be charged if no fault is found.

If your lights have gone out after you isolated the supply, and your meter is still running, then it is possible that it isn't your meter. Your supplier will probably suggest that you ask a local electrician to investigate - at cost to you.

  • Rather than looking at the flashing light I would suggest taking readings from the meter, take two readings 24 hours apart just using what you normally would and see how many units you have used, then call first utility or check old bills to see if your usage is consistent.

I'm not sure how consistent it will be a cause i have been using an electric heater on an off since the boiler packed in this winter. Just think it'strange that the meter still flashes when ive isolated the supply but from the comments i doubt the electric company would take responsibility and I don't have the knows how to know whether they aren't just trying to shirk responsibility.

Does the red light mean your using electric?
Or is it saying it on...

With respect, you need to monitor your actual consumption over a period of days. Stop looking at the LED and start taking meter readings at the same time each day for, say, a week. It is not a question of the supplier not taking responsibility: it is more a case of you demonstrating to them that there is an issue.

Have you had a bill and is it this that is causing you all this anxiety? It is very easy to build up a large bill with an electric heater. A one bar 1kW heater on for 2 hours a day would cost me about £7 per month.

  • I look at my meter every day. I don't take a daily reading but i see it every time i walk from the bedroom to the lounge (Sad to say I'm pretty obsessed with watching it). I know when i use certain things the light blinks constantly and when I have nothing on it blinks slowly which wasn't matching up yesterday. So I no longer think the neighbours are stealing my electric but did find it odd that it still flashes at the same speed when the electric is turned off at the mains.

If it's a white box LCD meter the red light will be on solid if there is no draw or minutiae draw.

Mine sometimes goes into solid red for a while when only my clock radio & wifi router are drawing power until fridgefreezer kicks in again.

So do you have a mains gas boiler as well as an immersion heater? You do realise that heating and hot watering by electricity is costing you about 300% more per kWh than by gas?
It would be very much in your interest to get the boiler repaired ASAP.
