Another qestion for you clever people. I have starage heaters and Economy 7. Do I have to have Economy 7 to run storage heaters? Or could I use ordinary day rate? Also does anyone know which is the cheapest Economy 7? What rates are yours? Thanks

As far as I know you don't have to be on E7 to use storage heaters but why wouldn't you want to? The idea of storage heaters is that they heat up at night (cheap rate) and discharge their heat during the day.

You can have private timeswitches that will do the same as E7 but what you've got to remember is that you have E7 for 2 reasons:

1 - switching your heating on as chickadee states. And...
2 - getting a cheap rate for your heating

You need to decide whether standard 1 rate supplier tariffs work out cheaper than E7 for you. the timeswitch is less relevant since you can get an electrician to fit a private one. Just remember though, E7 meters & timeswitches are dealt with by your local engineers, private ones are solely your responsibility. This means that if the tims go wrong and you lose out in your tariff, it's your problem. Whereas if the one supplied on the meter goes wrong, your Supplier will help sort your bills with you...

    I've been Money Tipped!
thanks very helpful. It's just that I do have storage heaters but just wondering if they're worth it as I've looked around and the cheapest I can find for E7 is british gas click whoch is 2.24p per unit at night. But the day rate is 15p for first 200 units then 11p for the rest so am just wondering how I can make the day units less?

Hubbie says we should change to a supplier with chreaper day rates in spring then change back in winter, but I don't like a lot of messing around really. But he has found a company whose day rates are 8p so would be cheaper in spring/summer. As we don't use a lot on night rate in summer. although I try to use timers and do washing/bread making etc at night

    Thanks anyway

Thanks this is useful for me as I have night storage heaters. Where did you find the 2.24p night rate with British Gas? I've looked on their website but can't find it anywhere. Have you got a link to it by any chance?

    Thanks

I think I would agree with your husband. Sometimes it can be better to change inline with your seasonal use if you can't find a tariff that fits you all year round. You just have to make sure that whilst your Suppliers are waiting to send you bills, that you keep the money you would have paid. You avoid any nasty surprises then.

You could explore a differet type of meter with your Supplier as some burst in the day as well giving you a few hours where you could get the things that rack up your bill e.g. washing. I don't know if thats any use but it may be worth considering...
