Credit file improvement

I'm ashamed to admit that I have a truly frightening credit score. Missed payments, defaults, the whole shebang. I owe around £3000 to a few lenders and I really, really want to get things cleaned up. I know it will take some time, but it's definitely time to face the music instead of burying my head in the sand.
What's the best way to go about this? I'm ignorant in my knowledge of such things. Is there a way to approach the lenders I have defaults with, make an agreement to pay a certain amount each month and ask them to remove the negative from my file once it's paid?
Any advice and help very much appreciated.

Post up some detail. What debts, what status, which are being actively collected, any turning into CCJs, how old etc.
You're very unlikely to get the defaults removed, but you can work out a plan to get your file in a better shape in a few years time.0 -
Hi
I agree with zx81 that it’s rare for creditor’s to remove defaults from someone’s credit file. Bear in mind that your defaulted debts will drop off your credit file 6 years after the default date and would no longer have a negative impact.

Negatives won't get removed. Missed and late payments won't get removed and defaults will only get marked as satisfied once paid. You're not going to be able to make a bad credit file disappear. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Only time will heal your credit file.
Creditors have to present a true and accurate record of the way you have conducted your affairs, defaults can only be removed if they were unfairly applied in the first place.
If you defaulted on payments, then the defaults were applied correctly, so trying to get them removed is a pointless excercise.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
