My widowed mother lives alone and we are mostly in touch via the phone. She lives too far away for me to visit more often than every 3 months.
She has read out a letter that she says comes from TalkTalk and it waffled about her broadband. She isn't on a computer and only needs a basic service to make and receive calls on her landline. As far as I know, she pays £20 a month for this (and her payments are up to date).
Does anyone know if there are any safeguards for the elderly and phone line-rental? She keeps repeating that she doesn't want broadband, she doesn't have a computer (both true) and can't see why she should pay this higher sum mentioned in her letter.

if she's in receipt of certain benefits she could be on BT basic
You can usually get BT Basic if you’re claiming one of the benefits below.
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Pensions Credit (Guaranteed Credit)
- Employment and Support Allowance (income related)
- Universal Credit (and are on zero earnings)
Universal Credit is a new benefit. See page 7 for more details
