Not always. The driveway that runs down the side of our house is used to access two bungalows to the rear of my property, which were built on land originally part of my property's title plan before it was sold off. The driveway is still solely my property however there is a covenant in the deeds stipulating a right of access for the bungalow owners and also that the cost to maintain it is shared.

I can't see that you would be liable. The workmen dug the hole to access someone elses services that just happened to be under your land. Any claim for injury should be met from the workmens public liability insurance.

Do/did you fret about any claim should a child or neighbour trip up on your land, pre and post-hole workings?

Maybe the neighbour was just getting a bit confused - OP may be the sole owner but there may be covenants in everyone's deeds stipulating a right of access for some reason or another.
