Landlord Charging for Internal Insurance

Hi everyone

My daughter has recently moved into a block of flats which is one of 8 in her block and there are 6 blocks in the complex owned by one superior landlord.
Prior to moving in she had no idea that the landlord as well as charging for insurance which comes into the maintenance costs is also charging for internal insurance which everyone individually pays. My daughter has just had a notice to pay £198.12 for this internal insurance would this be usual.

It's not really a case of what's 'usual', it's a case of what was contractually agreed to.

Your daughter should check the contracts she signed. If the charge isn't mentioned in the contract, and she wasn't told about the charge before signing the contract - then the legal position is that she doesn't have to pay.

But I guess you have to judge the pros and cons of your daughter getting into a dispute with her landlord over this.

For example, some landlords might decide to evict as soon as the fixed term of the tenancy finishes because of a dispute like this, and the landlord might also refuse to give your daughter a good landlord's reference for her next place.

Other landlords might be far more reasonable.
