Who is right. Run it until it breaks and prove them right/wrong?
I wouldnt run a belt past 60,000 miles or 5 years.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hmm. My car has the 1.6 HDi engine, and the handbook for that definitely says 10 years or 100K, whichever comes first. But I do agree with Forgotmyname to a large extent - given the damage that can be caused if it snaps, I'd err on the side of caution if you're in any doubt.0

I think this one in ad hasn't been changed and has done 60,000 miles. How much would it cost to get my mechanic to do it after I bought it?0

I know my engine is not exactly the same as yours, but my mechanic did mine for around the £170 mark or thereabouts - and that included the water pump change as well. Obviously the price will be different depending on what yours charges for labour - with jobs like this one, the parts are not particularly expensive, but there's a fair bit of labour involved ( which is why it's always worth changing the water pump while you're at it - whilst he's got it stripped down and accessible, it'd be false economy not to ).0

Have you checked any manufacturers updates? the handbook on my zafira stated one interval, but an update from vauxhall dropped it down to 40k due to water pump failures. I wouldn't just go on a handbook to be honest.0 -

What I was told by the main dealer is that the figures are as you say. But! The belt needs inspecting at 5 years (not sure about the mileage)
Inspecting the belt is more or less the same job as replacing it. I let it go to 6 years as I'm well under the mileage and had it changed.0 -

exactly this - it would also be gutting to change the belt, then have the pump fail and throw the belt off and causing the same amount of damage as a snapped belt.0 -
