Card providers do get a cut, but the cut they get is smaller than most businesses are charged for actually banking cash. This was a reason why cashback at tills was so popular with some shops. Just to add to the mix they have self service tills which take in a lot of small change so they don't even have to withdraw small change from the bank, which is also expensive.0

I imagine if Amex changed their contactless scheme it would just have the effect of killing support for it dead. Support for Amex Expresspay is already much much lower than Mastercard Paypass and Visa Contactless/payWave, as anybody who regularly uses an Amex will know!0
