Overnight Hit and Run! What do we do?

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for my boyfriend? This is quite a confusing story, so I will try my best to stick to the point.
Right, so, my boyfriend's (BF's) car was parked on the side of the road, next to my house, overnight. We woke up this morning to find his car had been scraped and dented on the side, and the windscreen had smashed.
My step-brother saw most of what happened through his bedroom window, as it woke him up during the night. Even though he did not see my boyfriend's car being hit, he did see our neighbour's son driving into the fence, then smashing up his own parent's car on their driveway, then later on heard the crash which we know was him smashing into my BF's car.
No one actually saw the guy hit my boyfriends car, but his own parents are sure it was him, and so is my step-brother.
There is dark paint work which has obviously come off the guy's vehicle onto my boyfriend's silver car. If we can find out from his parents later tonight the guy's registration number, vehicle and personal details, will he have to pay to get the car fixed?
We have informed the police of what has happened, and are waiting on something to happen... we would love to ask the police to find this guy who is supposedly on bail anyway, and take a look at his vehicle for any scrapes or silver left-overs which will provide evidence to support my boyfriend.
I'm pretty sure the fact that my step-brother heard the crash straight after that guy was seen smashing into fences, bollards and his own parent's vehicle is enough evidence, and also the fact that his parents have admitted he was drunk and did do all of those things last night.
What does everyone reckon?
It's one of those situations where you are left thinking, is there sufficient evidence to support our claim... well, we do hope so.
Thanks.

surely you'd just claim via the insurance?0

Yep, can't see this going anywhere with the police or the guy who did it.
We’ve just moved from a house where both mine and my housemate’s cars were damaged. The first time with mine we both saw a neighbour kick my car damaging the front wing, no independent witness though so although the police investigated, as soon as him and his mother both said he wasn’t even at the house that night, with no evidence otherwise we were on a hiding to nothing. Both our cars had hit and runs in the night as well, both by the same other vehicle and on separate nights, again not witnesses or evidence so police not interested.
Good luck OP but I think you’ll be footing this bill yourselves0 -
Sounds harsh, but the police don't have the time or resources to work on these kind of issues anymore (at least in London) and won't care.
Get a crime reference number off of the police and claim for damage through your insurer (if it makes financial sense considering excess, loss of NCD, etc) or through the MIB.
