On diesels, you're either both right or both wrong, depending how you look at it.
Diesel cars get better MPG.
Set against this, they're more expensive to buy in the first place, and depending upon the manufacturer can be more expensive to maintain (e.g. it's a fact that some Peugeots work on a 20k service cycle - though I wouldn't risk it - while others are on a 10k cycle....while it's not as black & white as petrol versus diesel, the only petrol engines on the 10k cycle are the highly tuned ones, whilst a lot of the diesel ones are).
What this boils down to is for every car (and varying by age) there's a certain annual mileage where diesels become cheaper to run than petrol. It could be as low as a few k on some models/manufacturers, as much as 20-30k/yr on other ones. Example, if in practical terms you only get 5mpg more out of a diesel than a petrol that's only 1p per mile less, so if you've paid £2k more for the car you'll need go 20,000 miles before you get a return.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0
