    Hi Dunesand.....thanks for the info....

I've no knowledge of cars at all and I would freely admit that to anyone who'd care to listen.........your maths just gave me a chuckle is all!!

    Thanks again ;)

i've only really just looked at this way of doing it by -only paying off depreciation-. Just wondered what people thought. I put it out there to get hammered... I, like most, want to know the most cost effective way of running a newish car.

If it makes absolutely no sense then I expect this is the place I'll get told that!

Dunesand i am not being nasty or anything like that at all but i have been selling cars (high performance sports) for a number of years now and your maths are not making sense in the slightest.

I think the service charges that you are stating are through a dealership? You can get services much cheaper than the figures you are coming back with and that does not mean a worse service.

As for the Mazda 3, if you are serious about getting one then there really are cheaper examples than you are quoting as well. You stand absolutly no chance of getting £12,000 for a second hand private sale, no way. As i said, the dealers are selling for less than that so dont set your heart on that either.

on the plus side though i have heard that the Mazda 3 is a very reliable car.

burbs, like I said the £12k remark was optimistic... But the idea of paying off the just the depreciation on the car, does that sound like something worth doing?
  • Hi this is my first post - thought I'd try here before trying my luck starting a new thread.

I want to sell my car privately as the trade in offer was well below my expectations. It's worth about 6.5k.
My problem is how do I handle a private sale for such a large amount of money? I'm wary of counterfeit cash/bankers drafts.
The only solution I can think of would be to ask the buyer to meet me at my bank to pay the money in.

Any advice on handling the sale/finances would be very welcome

Welcome to MSE!!! You might be best to start your own thread as your topic is different to this but anyway, think I read something about this on BBC or maybe on here, but best bet is to either do the trade in a bank and only hand over once the bank have OK'd it, also ring the issuing bank to cheque it's kosher.

A friend of a friend got caught out by this, they then spotted the car for sale in the autotrader went round to 'sort things out' only to find it was a garage who were playing dumb?!
2p off is still 2p off!
  • Thanks for the advice fatboyonadiet! Sorry it took a while to get back. I would be delighted to contribute to your fund raising event, but you'll have to tell this newbie how to do it.

Gibby - Being a car dealer what you say about dealers selling a car worth 4k for 7k in their showroom is complete fiction. If dealers actually do that then they would be out of business. As you posted before that statement, there is usually about a grand to play with, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less depending on car and where its sourced from.

I bought 2001 2.0 mondeo zetec at auction for £4,300 12 months ago. Same car at small car lot was £6-7,000. The big dealers with indoor showrooms that we have seen on the telly wanted £9,995 for similar car but with lower mileage.
In fairness to the dealers if the car would have blown up on the way home from the auction I wouldn`t have had a leg to stand on but luckily for me 20,000 miles later and all Ive needed is a set of front pads.
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

If you bought the car for £4300 and then saw it at a dealer for £6000 then that is a mark up of £1700. As a dealer myself i would say this is about right, then we can knock around £2-300 off this price without too much hassle and still clear a nice profit.

This however is nowhere near the statement that i was replying to where the person said that a 4k car is sold for 7k in a car showroom, that is still untrue.

Also big dealerships such as MotorCraft and the like hugely inflate their prices as everyone knows, they need to clear a huge profit to keep their vast showrooms operational.
