Scottish debt now in england

Options
Hi to start i racked up big debt in scotland as a student. I paid alot of the debts off however i moved to england to get a better job. I have not hear anything in five years from the old debts still outstanding. Stupid i know but i dont have a bank account or got any credit in 5 years. I am however on the electoral roll in england at my current adress. The problem is now i need a bank account i always used cash but obvious my new employer wont give me cash and wants a bank account. Will i be able to get a new bank account at my current adress without my old debts finding me? Obvioualy no one knows my new adress am i opening a can of worms by gettif a credit search? Thanks so much in advance.

    Hi,

The statute of limitations in Scotland is 5 years.

If you have not paid or acknowledged them in that time, then they will now be statute barred and written off.

(Statute barred debts are extinguished in Scotland after 5 years)

If there is any doubt, just apply for a basic bank account, available to everyone, which has no borrowing facility, and no credit check.

  • Hi yes thanks so much for the reply. I am still paying as much as i can on the debts i have made payments. I was wondering though after five years will the arreas just drop of my credit file or will it be the standard six years? Thanks very much. I am aware the debts i am paying are not statue barred as i am making payments but for the ones i am not im pretty sure they are statue barred.
