Home Insurance Renewal & No Claim years?

My home insurance is coming up for renewal. The policy has always been in my wife's name and we have never made a claim for 10+years.
Shopping around on price comparison websites there are quotes much cheaper than our current insurance company. However, I have a few questions, perhaps someone knows the answer too?
Our current renewal information does not state the number of years of no claims that we have, only states that we declared 5 years on last years policy. How do insurance companies establish the number of years of no claims?
If I add my name to the policy (a joint policy) does this affect the number of no claim years that we are declaring because the no claims may have been built up in my wife's name?

Having just been trawling the comparison sites for home insurance, moneysupermarket says:
Your years of no claims should be on your current insurance documents. It’s the number of years you can get in writing from your current insurance company.
For me it says 5 years, despite the fact that I've been insured for 20+ years and have never claimed.Stompa0
