Basically my mothers phone which she's never backed up has suddenly stopped ringing (making a noise) when someone calls.
No it's not on mute.
So we were going to try updating it to see if that fixed it. It's an iPhone 5S on iOS8.
So when i plug it in it keeps asking if i want to restore from an earlier backup (except there isn't one - these backups are of another family members iphone) or whether we want to set it up as a new phone.
Thing is it has a load of photos on there that she doesn't want to gamble on losing.
Will setting up as a new phone erase the photos etc or not? If it will then how can she get them off the phone since it wont obviously let her backup.

When you plug in the phone does it show up in 'Computer' with a folder called 'DCIM'. If not unplug it then plug it in and unlock your phone, it may come up with a message asking if it will allow your computer access, say yes. the iPhone should appear in Computer and in the DCIM folder are all the photos. Transfer these into a folder on your computer.
If you can't, get a dropbox account or something, then upload all your photos onto the cloud service. Then you log into Dropbox onto your computer and download them all. There's another backup.
Once you've backed everything up you can do a system restore of the phone.0 -
Hi,
what about the not ringing problem?
Has it been accidentally set on 'do not disturb', a wee crescent moon icon showing?0 -

.
Does it vibrate and show the caller name/caller ID on the screen when someone calls?
If you swipe up then is the 'moon' icon on or off?
If you go into #settings #sounds #ringtone and select a ringtone then can you hear it play at that point?
As already suggested by Sharon87, if you plug an iPhone into a PC with the charger/usb cable but without iTunes running then, after the PC has had a sniff at it and installed the correct drivers, it should show you the DCIM/pictures folder. You can copy them to the hard disk for now and at least they will be temporarily safe.0 -
It was a MAC I had plugged it in on & im not very good with that operating system.
But I'll ask her about this moon icon. Thanks.0 -
How do you set up for ease all the data on phone,
If you just want to erase all phone data , there are a lot of chance and tool for you to choose ,
maybe you can use erase tool to remove phone data , or when the data has been deleted , you can make a lot of new data to cover the deleted data . once them was covered , them are can disappeared from phone forever

Setting up as a new iPhone would lose the pictures, yes.
Granted it *may* take a while (depending on your mother's broadband connection) but to save the pictures (I assumed Photos for iCloud is disabled?) I'd suggest downloading Google Photos from the App Store.
If you wanted to check for iCloud Photos log into iCloud.com with your Mum's Apple I.D. and and password and they should show up there. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
