Need advice re job with company making me redundant...

Hi,

So, my position ( and one other employees) is being made redundant due to a restructure of the department.

I'm on 30 day consultation currently.

A position has been advertised within my company that I am am qualified for and experienced in, that is within my pay grade.

Do the company have any obligation to offer me the position in order to mitigate my redundancy? It is being advertised externally at the moment, and I have been invited to interview for it.

I have been working for the company for 2.5 years.

Thanks in advice for any help.

Difficult question to answer. Qualified for and able to do are not necessarily the same thing. I'm qualified to teach, but I wouldn't digest putting that to the test in a classroom! So the answer, on these facts, is maybe and maybe not! Have you actually put this to the employer? Because if you believe that this should be what they do, you have to say so.

As you have only been working there a short time, it would be better to get the vacancy however you come by it - though I think there should have interviewed you first before offering it externally. After all any 'redundancy' package is not going to be very big.

Using interview to establish that the job is a suitable alternative possibly with a trial period is a legitimate way to deal with the situation if they are not sure.

the opportunity to establish if the job is really a suitable alternative is a two way exercise take advantage of it.

risk is they decide it is but you decide you don't want it, then you could lose the redundancy(some places are not mean and will still pay).
