Cancelling Car Insurance

I a few weeks ago crashed my car. It was my fault and no other party was involved. (Made a claim against my self stupidly).
I decided to call the broker today to tell them that I wanted a couple of weeks to put a new car onto my policy whilst I claimed back the value of my vehicle.
She told me I have 7 days to add a new car to my policy or I will have to pay the remainder of my car insurance (I pay monthly). So as it has been 7 days the policy needs to be cancelled and I will have to pay the remainder.
But I AM NOT going to just give them the remainder especially since it had already been 7 days since my accident and my policy was still open until I CALLED them.
Please can someone advise me. I am in no financial position to make a payment of the remainder/ as well as access cost of £600 and buy a new car and take out a new policy on that car.
Surely the fact they didnt close the policy 7 days after the crash makes these terms void and they should give me a couple more weeks to keep the policy open-so I can put my new car onit. I ended up getting really annoyed with the lady on the phone and cursing her and hanging up. As she didn't seem to see this point.( hope this isnt used against me.) I explicitly told her I dont want my policy cancelled- because if it was to be cancelled it should have been done by them 7 days after my accident not now.
Please any assistance would be super. Im losing my mind thinking about this!!!
Kind regards :A

Check your policy documents. They wouldn't cancel the policy 7 days after the accident, it would be 7 days after they found out the vehicle was a total loss. If the vehicle was repaired under the insurance then the policy would have continued as normal.
If they have not cancelled within 7 days of you receiving the total loss payment, then you've had extra time. I do believe that just because they didn't cancel it within the 7 days doesn't make that term void unfortunately. If it was an error on their part it hasn't caused any detriment to you, it's been to your benefit if anything because you could have bought another car in the meantime. Also insurers don't 'have' to allow you to put another car in the policy, some will just cancel the policy.
You do have to pay for the remainder of the policy. Motor policies are yearly policies, but they essentially give you a 'loan' to pay it monthly. If there is a total loss and the policy cancelled, you still have to pay for the remainder of the policy as you've effectively 'used' that policy.0 -
7 days after their decision on what to do with your car. Get a cheap car quickly and stick that on the insurance. Or your going to have to cancel and still pay the full premium.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Pretty much what forgotmyname said. It's 7 days from when they decide to write it off. If you've had longer than that you should see it as a benefit and not a reason to swear down the phone at someone because they won't give you more time that, by your policy wording, you are not entitled to.0

You know what is pathetic. They aren't letting me put any car on the new policy. None what so ever. So the way it looks is. I am going to have to cancel as well as paying for a new policy.0

Have they said why they wont allow another car on the policy ?
Are they they refusing to insure you ?0 -
They may be able to refuse to insure your new car if it's not something they would normally insure, but to not insure ANY car is a bit strange, unless they've already cancelled the policy or deemed you passed the time allowed to do so and therefore won't accept any replacements now.
As above, what have they said?0 -
When our car was written off Tesco gave us 28 days from we received settlement to add another car to the policy.0

I have had a suspended license before for a DR10. But they insured me then. Maybe the person I spoke to was lying and just wanted me to cancel. Is there anyway I can find out without actually having to buy a new car.
When I asked we went through the specs of the new car- as I didn't have a reg number to give. This time I will give them a random one and see what can be done.

Their underwriting criteria won't be publicly available. You will need to ask them exactly why they won't insure the car to give you an indication of what about it makes it unacceptable.0
