As already posted I`ve had two quotes this week for a new boiler and yesterday a local installer arrived to give a third.
The conversation was short and brief.
What`s wrong with your current boiler?
    Nothing.
Then why do you want to change it?
    It`s over 20 years old.
They don`t make them like that anymore and if it ain`t broke don`t fix.
The 20% efficiency saving a year you would make will take years to recover the outlay for a new one.
Here`s my card, phone me when you need me and I`ll and give you a quote then.

Didn't have a choice I'm afraid. My boiler was pressurising the heating circuit with mains pressure, because of a failed seal. The Worcester boiler I had is notoriously difficult (expensive) to fix. So the only option was to replace. The new boiler is considerably better at heating the hot water, the older boiler was deteriorating gradually so you didn't notice. I also bought a boiler with a 7 years breakdown cover, so no worries for the next 5 years.
Difficult to tell if the boiler is more efficient, because each year is slightly different to the next and comparisons are very dependant on the weather.

    Hi sevenonine
I had already identified the Ideal logic he24 as a good buy, and was prepared to do a bit of a battle to get a quote using it. As it was, the guy suggested it himself.
My installation was a bit more involved than most because the boiler is in the loft space. This involved extra work removing and replacing flue pipes in the roof.

Thanks for your comprehensive and helpful response. I'm impressed with your research and I will look at CheckaTrader - is that a website?
On reading your last para I think perhaps your choice depended on locating the new boiler in your loft. My present boiler is located in the kitchen and already has the flue and piping in place. So I don't need a higher output boiler: my house is a small terrace with 7 radiators, so a budget combi/condensing boiler like the Alpha would be OK.

The actual website is Checkatrade.com. I have used the site again for a fitter for my new kitchen and have not been disappointed My choice was based more on the honesty, professional approach and low 'pushiness' of the fitter, together with the cost. The location was already determined by where my previous boiler was situated. Certainly your location will mean an easier (cheaper?) installation, although it might mean a change in flue, depending on the boiler chosen.

The entire job came out at £1950. I am in South Essex, so not the cheapest area. Hope this helps.

I had a visit from a Glowarm rep who gave me quotes on Gloworm (£2,190); and Ideal Logic 30kW (£2,290).

I also looked at Plumbnation's website to get an idea of just their boiler prices. Their price for the Ideal Logic + 30Kw boiler was £876.52 which means Gloworm's installation charge is loaded by £1,414. I was also given a comprehensive idea of what the process would involve - scale reducer, inhibitor, mains chemical flush, new condensing piping etc...10 year warranty. Do you think this is a reasonable price. I am located in SW London but I still think it is high.

Not sure what is happening to Glowworm, they seem to be cheaper than Potterton these days. I like it so much

I love my Glowworm, which optimises for condensation and has weather compensation. Bizarrely, it is now the budget option by price, even though the Smart Wiring Centre2 is the Holy Grail I was missing in 2010......................................The standard engineer you can get will never be able to handle the job Hence I am not recommending a Glow worm.

The Glowworm boiler priced by Plumbnation is £787.50 and Glowarm's installation price (£2,190) - plus £1,403.

I guess your comment above re this boiler says it all?
