Options
Hi

Can anyone tell me roughly how much it should cost to get removal men to help me move house?

I live in the north east of england and am moving from a 2 bed semi.

Any ideas????

thanks

  • I think it is very difficult to give a rough cost as it depends how much stuff you have, including all that stuff in the garage and shed, garden pots, etc, etc. You might be minimalistic in a 2 bed semi or you might have it stuffed to the rafters! It also depends on how much you are prepared to pack yourself.

One tip though, when I moved from Leeds to a nearby small town, when I got a few quotes I found that the Leeds based removers were more expensive than the ones base in the town I was moving to - it is worth looking at removers near your current home and those near your new home to see if there is a difference. Also, the distance doesn't seem to make that much difference as all the cost is in the loading, unloading, etc. The actual distance is just petrol costs so when I moved, again, 50 miles, it wasn't that much more expensive than when I move 10.

One tip is maybe to try not to move on a Friday. Most sales complete on a Friday but if you can agree otherwise with your vendor there isn't any reason why this should be the case. You might find the removers are less busy on another day and will charge less.

Moving is very stressful and good removers can make a difference that is worth a few quid extra so get some recommendations. Be careful of 'man and van' options and make sure your possessions are insured in transit or it could end up costing you money.
  • thanks Peartree. Im only moving 1 mile, but will get a couple of quotes to make sure Im not paying too much! I just wanted a ballpark figure for my budget!

    thanks again

  • Well all I know is that when we moved 14 years ago to a house pretty much down the road, we paid £600 for three guys to load everything onto their lorry and then off again in the new house. We packed everything ourselves.

My boss has this week moved from East London to Essex, had three quotes all from well known removal companies, but for them to pack everything and deliver to the new property and she has paid £2800 !!

As in everything in life, you pays your money you takes your choice.
  • We live in the south and have just moved from a 3 bed semi. We had loads of stuff, and moved about half a mile. The quotes we had ranged from £680 to £820. That was for us to pack ourselves, but included the loan of boxes and insurance.
  • I think when I moved the contents of a three bedroom house from Yorks to Lancs (including masses of garden pots, etc) it cost about £400 but that was six years ago. For my last two moves the removers promised boxes for me to pack myself but were unable to deliver when it came down to it. Finding enough boxes yourself is an absolute pig and you really need to make friends at your local supermarket (fruit and veg section tends to be the best!). My removers also insisted that my (small) wardrobe would not go upstairs at my new house. However, the next day me and two septugenerians managed it quite easily!
