Got another scanner from friend, downloaded driver ok, but still a problem??

Hi again

I got a scanner from my friend today (artec ultima 2000E+) and downloaded the driver but still having problems.

When I click on 'scan' it brings up box saying 'Dusb3ar, Cannot operate, 1. Please check whether the scanner connects to the computer, 2. Make sure that the scanner connects to the power and the LED is on, 3. Note that you can not connect the scanner to the bus power device'

Then it brings up 'TWAIN error! Failed to open the TWAIN driver'

Problem is my friend didnt give me a power lead and I dont see any place where one would fit, I just connected the USB cable to the laptop and the green LED light is on and I downloaded the driver for it ok.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Looking around it looks like it is USB powered.

First thing I thought of was to make sure it's the only device on that USB port, What do I mean?

You need to go into device manager and go down list to USB controlers and then right click one of the USB Root Hubs and select the properties then the power tab.

See if the scanner is listed and that no other device is on the same hub.

The other thing I thought of was did you have the right drivers. for XP you need XP drivers or windows 2000 often work with XP, you can not use 98X drivers with XP.

Also sometimes it matters how you install the drivers i.e. install drivers before pluging device in or the other way around, if you have no manual I would just try it both ways.

The scanner isn't listed in one of the USB Roob Hubs, all it says is 'Unknown USB Device'. Yeah I downloaded the XP driver for it!

If you've got a few USB devices plugged in that are powered by the USB port, chances are that there's not enough available to power the scanner. USB ports only have a 500mA maximum available current per hub, not port, to power anything plugged into them. So, XP detects a connection to the USB but as there's not enough current to supply the scanner, the scanner just sends back garbage, if anything, when XP requests data from it.

Try unplugging everything USB apart from mouse and keyboard and see if it runs.

Be warned though.. I had one of these around 6 years ago and there was no way I could get it installed under XP. Maybe the drivers are better now.

That is the same point I was making, been there got the tea shirt :)

Are the drivers you have the same as here:

  • I have the same problem with Artec Ultima 2000 Scanner. I visited http://nuclear.dnsprotect.com/~artectv/Service_e/nl/home/drivers.htm to update my driver, but found that it doesn't appear to be compatible with Windows Vista. Any solutions?
