"Change of mind" having thought that the HP with its "lightscribe" capability seemed like a good idea and a step forward then having tried to price their blanc discs cannot find any to buy, well certainly not blanc DVD only came across blanc CD's in my search. Better go for either the Sony or Pioneer model, both are about the same price and spec looks similar.

Pioneer can write dvd-r at 16 speed which the sony cant if thats any help and the sony one likes datawrite discs which the liteon doesnt, sorry havent tested on the pioneer yet and both like the ritek goa 05 discs but i think most burners like and can be reasonably cheap.

I have the LiteON SOHW-1633S and I've not found a disc that it doesnt like. I use datawrite quite ofter with 100% burn success.

The best drives are certainly the LG GSA-4163B and NEC ND35xx as posted by wolfman.

i have just bought a HP DVD640i lightscribe and all i can say is that it is awsome, i bought the retail pack from ebuyer and got a heap of software, the actual lightscribe writing onto the disk is perfect, altough it takes around 35 min to burn a image on best quality.

the actual burning of the disk is very quiet.

installation was no problem as HP provide a installation video.
you can buy blank lightscribe disk from ebuyer.

    Hi manutd
tried your link but could only come up with blanc cd r and the HP burner. Found DVD r on sale at SVP discs cost £4.49 for pack of 5, don't know how that compares with price you paid on E Buyer, seems a bit expensive but then again you are not incurring the cost of labels or ink etc. Have you "backed up" any DVD's and played the copy back through a domestic DVD player, if so is the copy as good as the original? Also when copying a DVD does it de-regionalise it, I'm asking this because I have some DVD's that I want to copy and send onto to my relatives in Australia however UK is region 2 and Australia is region 5 ?

The LG GSA-4163B and NEC ND35xx are the best writers on the market at the moment. The LG edges the NEC. I've got an NEC ND3500 and have never had a problem. A friend of mine has the LG though and says it's excellent. Have a look at this link for more information:

Thanks for the link wolfman. I didn't know very much about DVD writers and enjoyed reading the information and reviews on this site and have added it to my favourite places to keep myself up to date. The NEC & Pioneer writers are very impressive, guess I will have to flip a coin to decide.
