Remove compacted Crushed gravel

Hi all. I am removing a block paved patio area in my garden that the previous owners left. I need to remove the hardcore, which is like hitting concrete with my spade. Any ideas on how to dislodge it to make it easy to dig out? Someone suggested I buy a pick axe and smash away at it. But before I go and buy one i wondered if there was a better way? Thanks :j

A pick-axe will be the cheapest option - can you perhaps borrow one from a friend if you don't want to buy one ?
An alternative would be to hire a breaker ( for example : https://www.hss.com/hire/c/breaking-and-drilling/electric-breakers )
Although that's probably a bit overkill if it's just compacted hardcore, rather than solid concrete. A pick-axe will do the job, and won't cost much ( a quick Google shows Wickes have them for £20, you'll probably easily find cheaper than that as well ). As a bonus, you'll get a free work-out into the bargain
