Options
I have a VPN app that works well on my android phone. Is it possible to connect to my home WiFi, then create a VPN hotspot through my phone to connect other devices?

In other words can you access your network via VPN????

Yes, but you won't be able to access your shared files without an awful lot of messing about, in fact apart from using your home internet as a VPN, doing so on a smart phone is almost entirely pointless.

  • From another forum someone suggested that what i really want to do is use my phone as WiFi repeater but with WiFi on the phone going through my VPN app. Does this make sense?

Not really but I can guess what you want to do, its not a good idea to do it on the phone because it probably cant handle the traffic to act a gateway, what you need is a VPN router or router that has a built in VPN client.

The thing is if you cant trust your own home network you have bigger problems.

(There are some articles but they all require a rooted phone and are fairly advanced so its not really something for this forum)

Draytek routers are really good for creating a "home" vpn or even set up an old/2nd hand mac min with OS Server on it. Mac Format have an article on it this month.

another way is to use pia. The cost £40 a year, but that also covers 5 devices. one device could be something like dd-wrt modem which will encrypt the whole household connections, and the other 4 could be mobiles. Or just 5 pcs

VPN has several meanings and you sort of cover two of them.

There a VPN's where you want your computer to appear to be coming from somewhere else, there are many legitimate reasons for this, privacy, avoiding your country blocking you (e.g. China blocking twitter), you want to be able to use work lan or wifi but do not want your employer to monitor your traffic (reasonable expectation of privacy vs employment contract).

There are VPN's where you want to connect from one Lan to another Lan e.g from your home network to your work network. For example you might work from home, connect to work network and then use SecureID to verify you are authorised.

VPN's are also used to describe splitting of networks, for example say you were a massive Plc you might use the 10.x.y.z subnet to split up your many offices, where x are for up to 250 odd countries around the world, y are for the 250 odd locations within those countries and z are for say around the devices within each network. With good use of the subnet mask (255.x.x.x) you can change the division of these IP's to fit any organisation size/structure.

Sometimes when you have a question it is best to say what you actually want to achieve.

    For example

"I want to be able to access my home PC"

"I want to be able to run Plex on my phone"

"I want to FTP into the back of my home NAS from work"

The answer is yes you can use the Hotspot feature on your Android and set your Android to use (open)VPN, but your mobile data useage may be massive, and maybe too slow to use kodi.
