Best places to live in Milton Keynes?

Hi everyone

I hope that some of you will be able to offer me some good advice. My wife and I are looking to move to Milton Keynes soon and I wanted to get some opinions on the best parts to live in. We're looking to start a family so school catchment is important to us. Of course local amenities would be a bonus.

I've looked around on forums for best area to live in but can't find anything post 2014. We recently viewed a few houses, one was in Oxley Park and while the area looked nice I noticed loads of for sale and to let signs around. We decided to have a chat with a local who told us the area used to be nice but now there's lots of housing association being moved into that area and so people are starting to move out. I don't mean for that to sound mean/snobby but she told us that because of that the area has started to go down hill.

Area's that I've been looking at are, Two Mile Ash, Great Holm, Westcroft, The Shenley's, Stony Stratford, Medbourne, Middleton, Willen, Giffard Park, Newport Pagnell.

Are we on the right track? Are there others that you would suggest considering?

Thanks for any advice you can offer. :)

    budget?
    type of property?

some good areas may be beyond your budget for the type of place you want/need
  • Hi, our budget is around £375k and we're looking for detached or semi detached preferably.

I must be getting old. I can remember when most of those were independent villages in their own right

Crownhill is also worth considering and in your price range you could get a 4 bed detached. Good choice of schools and a lovely park which is great for the kids but, as with a lot of Milton Keynes, it is a bit soulless

If schools are your deciding factor, Newport Pagnell is good for schools primary and secondary. Denbigh School at Shenley Church End always has high subscription and is an excellent school, check its catchment areas for estates.

Giffard Park is lovely but Stantonbury is the secondary catchment, though you might get lucky and get an Ousedale place in Newport Pagnell, same with Willen.

Stony is my favourite, but not for schools Im afraid, usually go to Radcliffe in Wolverton or possibly the old Kingsbrook in Deanhanger.

Any newer areas will always incorporate Low Cost Housing in MK, its part of their directive. Id sway to Newport Pagnell, small market town, decent sprinkling of shops/bars/takeaways good schools but still close enough to MK centre for shopping/going out.

I used to live in a place in Olney, it's on the outskirts of MK but it's a nice place and £375k would fit a 4 bed house in that area nicely, fantastic school, lots to do in the town, very well connected...

Olney doesn't meet the brief of being in MK unless they actually mean the council area. On that basis you might as well chuck in Winslow and Buckingham as being similar distances from the urban area of MK. In fact the latter are arguably stronger options if schools are a priority as it allows for access to grammar schools.

Or you could go the other way to Woburn Sands, Wavendon, Aspley Guise.
Lovely areas but 375,000 won't get you much choice
