Short Break in Milan, hotel advice

Hi guys

I am planning to book a short break for myself and my girlfriend to the beautiful Milan as a bit of a surprise in January. I am planning to fly to Milan Bergamo (BGY). Can anyone advise where I could find good hotel deals?

After all the kerfuffles (spelling?!) of the family over xmas you need another break I always feel!
Thanks

  • beautiful Milan? if you are trying to impress your girlfriend, try Paris or Barcelona. Milan is a dump and there isnt a great deal there, believe me. i nearly came home the same day it was that bad
  • we stayed in hotel galles in Milan in May, it was outside the main centre but on a good street for shopping!! it was also very close to an underground line which was really good for travel, any one way journey for 1 euro! the hotel itself was really nice and had a lovely roof top terrace

have to admit I wasnt overly impressed with Milan, but make sure when you go you visit Duomo (sp?) it was beautiful! also we found the busy street our hotel was on on the saturday became a ghost town on the sunday as nothing was open!

transport from bergamo airport to Milan itself was great, there are so many bus companies when you get to the airport that its really easy to get a bus
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!
  • you know when you are abroad and you drive through the rough outer part of town to get to the nice central bit. there is no nice central bit.

Since you are flying to Bergamo, why not go to Bergamo

  • I'm thinking of taking advantage of the Ryan Air sale ending at midnight.

Might book a trip to Milan. I hear it's not nice however I'm going for the sole puorpose of purchasing nice cheap leather loafers. Is the shopping there really that good? I'm not after expensive brands just good quality things from the market.

    Anyone recommend any good markets?
  • if you want to go to italy, you can find places much more beautiful and worth seeing :) and more romantic of course as you are going with your girlfriend :) why don't you try florence, verona, venice, even rome
    good luck!
  • shopping is rubbish in milan unless you want Gucci. Normal stuff is dearer and the pavement cafes charge 15 euros a pint (in the v small print)

Take Richard's advice - Bergamo has a lovely old town, and some very nice wine bars and restaurants. Short train ride to Lake Como or scruffy Milan.

We went to Milan a couple of years ago and loved it! They have the best pizza in Italy (nice deep pan). We stayed in Hotel Charley which is a little family run B&B and it was quite cheap. You can get a coach/train from Bergamo to Milan, and Hotel Charley is about a 10 minute walk from there. And the tube station is outside train station too so you can visit anywhere!

You should look at Rome as well. We got Ryanair penny flights and stayed in a hotel near vatican, it cost approx £50 a night for the two of us and has a lovely pool to relax in after a long days exploring.
Our dream has come true... :D
