Annual Travel Insurance Query

My friend has annual travel insurance, has had for several years, this year's due to expire 27th April. Unfortunately he suffered a stroke last week and is now in a very bad state. He booked a holiday several months ago due to fly early May.
My question, as he suffered the stroke whilst under cover of the insurance, is he covered for the cancellation even though the holiday dates are after the expiry date of the insurance?
