Tenerife - where is a good base stay at to explore the North and South

Hi, I'm hoping to get a last minute deal to Tenerife and I'd like to stay somewhere I can access the South and North easily via buses. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good 'in between' place to stay at, so that journey times aren't too long when travelling either North or South?

Santa Cruz, the capital, is at the junction of the motorways leading to Puerto in the north and Playa de las Americas in the south but SC does not appear on many booking sites although there are plenty of good hotels there.

The north and the south are very different destinations with different tourists in each. I love the north, wouldn't give a penny for a holiday in the south but I am not a beach person. You might do well to decide what type of holiday you want before booking, an hour in a bus each way may not make for a great holiday if you are doing it every day

I would echo the advice from Alan. Santa Cruz is mid way point, it is a nice port town but I would not class it as a holiday destination. Decide whether you want a beach type holiday ie in the south or a hotel in the north resort which can be used as a base to visit attractions in that region. North and South are completely different in climates, with the South being dry and arid and sunny whilst the north is greener and usually gets more rain.

    Useful bus map http://www.titsa.com/index.php/en/tenerife-by-bus/tourist-routes-in-tenerife

I doubt you'll get a package holiday late deal to stay at Santa Cruz.
Have a look at flight+hotel options on expedia, iberia.com and ba.com

ryanair has many flights to tenerife sur TFS airport and sometimes they are astonishingly cheap for a 4hour + flight.

Hi thank you all - I've now booked a flights+hotel deal for the South (approx £320) as I would prefer to stay in a warmer climate. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any excursions and walks that are worth going on? I'm not a massive hiker, but would love to explore the island.

Not been for a few years but the trip I remember would be to Mount Tiede (sp). The drive up to the mountain is something else going through the national park and the scenery with the old lava fields. Once there you could walk up to the crater, it does get cold so remember suitable clothing.

I would definetly recommended hiring a car from the airport because it works out alot cheaper than paying for multiple excursions.

If you want to walk right to the crater you must obtain a special permit. There are a limited number of these available each day.
