Hit a car but no record of it on gov website

Looking for a bit of advice. The other day my Mum borrowed my husbands car and drifted out of her lane a little on a roundabout and scraped another car. It was a minor scratch to their bumper but my Mum admitted fault and both parties agreed to settle privately and not get the insurance companies involved. My Mum was concerned my husband would loose his no claims.
Anyway the other party quoted a sum much higher than my mother expected and I did a check of their car on the gov website, just to see if everything was above board but when I put the reg and make in the website says there is no record of the car.
Im now a bit confused what to do. Should my Husband tell his insurance company? Is it too late, and will we get into trouble for not reporting it as soon as it happened ? Or should my Mum just grin and bear it and pay up ?
Thanks in advance for any advice

To comply with the policy conditions then report the incident to the insurer. (Assuming your Mum was insured to drive the car). It's your husbands call whether or not to risk the consequences of not complying
Whether or not the car she damaged is legit is irrelevant if she's to blame. She is liable for the costs involved as a result of the incident.
If you let the insurer deal with any claim then if it's cost effective your husband can reimburse them their payout to keep his ncd. They should ensure the quote now being disputed is correct as well as any other claims made0 -
Thanks for the info I did think if the car wasn't legit then she wouldn't be liable. Thanks for clearing that up0

You put the reg in but did you choose the correct make?
ie. Mercedes-Benz or just Mercedes etc 2 different groups. Select the wrong one and it wont show the details.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Yes I put the correct registration the car was a ford fusion I tried all variations of Ford there is but to no avail. Just though it sounded a bit dodgy0

If you type in Mot checker into google and click the first site at the top of the page you can check if the vehicle exists as it will tell you the MOT and Vehicle tax status. If it's not there did your mum take down the correct Registration?. If nothing comes up does she have the other drivers address you could always drive by an see if the car is there.0

She unfortunately was very shaken up at the time and immediately admitted liability and only took the womans name and the vehicle make and reg. She scraped the bumper not the paintwork so I felt the £250 they have asked my mum for a bit steep. Also they are saying the garage wants payment up front which seems a little odd to me, hence the reason why I checked the reg on the gov website to check it out.0

I had a car scraped (one panel affected) in a work car park and the person who did it wanted to pay for the damage himself. It was about £220 - seemed to be standard as the chap paying said it sounded about right. THe garage took payment directly from him before they did the work and then sent him the receipt.0

£250 for a crash she is getting fixed 'off the books' seems rather cheap to be honest. I think you are being a little bit paranoid. There are quite a few people whose excess will be more than that!0

How sure is she that she wrote down the reg number correctly? All else being equal, making a mistake with the reg number while in a shaken state seems a little more likely than the other car having an entirely fake reg number. She unfortunately was very shaken up at the time and immediately admitted liability and only took the womans name and the vehicle make and reg.0
