Do I need to notify?

Exiting a junction on a motorway, a van tried to jump in front of me, I braked sharply, but made contact with the rear of his van,

The driver verbally accepted responsibility, the facia on the front of my car has a minor crack, no damage to his van, details were exchanged.

I have no intention of claiming for the damage, as I say, it's very minor, do I have to inform my insurance company?

Read the terms and conditions - it will say yes

Risk it? Maybe, no-one can say you should as the driver may develop neck pains after a few pints at the pub after he mentions to his mates he was rear-ended. Without witnesses or dashcam footage, is it worth it?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Thank you, I've nothing to hide reporting it, I'm concerned that my insurance premiums will increase at renewal, although, I haven't claimed.

It's best to report it. It doesn't look good if the van driver was to claim against you and your insurers know nothing about it.
  • Are my premiums likely to increase once I notify my insurance?

Renewal is due next month, how do I list this when answering "claims or accidents within a specific periods, i.e. during the last 5 years?

List it as an incident, no claim.

Do dummy quotes online now with and without the incident in your history to see what difference it makes to the premium
