Debit Card transaction delay

 Hi A supermarket chain have taken money out of my account on 26th September for a transaction I made with them on 1 June!!!!! As a result I have gone overdrawn and will incur bank charges. I have phoned them and they say that it was a system error and they didn't realise transcations had not been processed.

I asked whether they had a responsibility to notify customers over delays in processing and they said no. They also said that legally they have six months to take the money!

It doesn't sound fair to me any advice would be greatful.

    • Assume the money has left your account immediately you
      • sign the cheque
      • enter your PIN
      • give your card details over the phone
    • Organise your paperwork
      • always get a receipt for cash withdrawals
      • allocate a section of your wallet/purse for receipts
      • carry a notebook and pencil, and update as you go
    • Reconcile your banking daily
      • online/telephone banking is useful, or
      • continue adding transactions to your statement, or
      • use a separate sheet of paper
    • Set up an overdraft facility to cover your failures in any of the above.
  • Unfortunately, debit card transactions can be processed up to 6 months after you made them.

Only thing you can do is ask bank to refund charges, otherwise you can't do anything.
