  • At my uni, they have what's known as a Hardship loan for anyone who is really struggling! Go speak to your Student Union...they maybe able to help!
Wins for 2022: Hydratem8 Water bottle, diary, flowers, Good food show tickets, childrens books x3,
Thanks to all who post the comps & please let the comping fairy sprinkle dust on my entries!
  • Is your overdraft interest free? If so it seems in your situation you could use it. I agree with the above post - apply for some money through the hardship fund and speak to a financial advisor within your uni they should be able to help.

Maybe apply for a part time job - many other students have to deal with the exact same situation you're in.
  • Hi,

As well as asking at the uni about hardship grants, I think you should have had an income assessed loan. All your parents would have to do is fill in a form and provide evidence of income. If they are low income then you might get extra loan or a grant, possibly a bursary from your uni too. There is no obligation for your parents to give you any money.

So what's that £292 got to do for you? The Old Style board will help you eat frugally but well. DS1 reckoned he could live on £10 per week last year, including food. I know he's not a great drinker, party-goer or clubber, and that for some people that's the main point of university, but he's still having a good time!
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • You would only be eligible for hardship payments if you had taken out all the funding available for you - that is you had been income-assessed. If you are stuck for income, you must do this first.

£292 is enough to last months!!!

Set out a budget to start off with. Say this will last you 2 months. Make sure you get a job to help after the 2 months.

Things I have learnt in the first week of uni:

Shop online!! Don't get the bus/taxi/walk to nearest supermarket, check out Tesco Online Grocery, its free delivery and most of the products online are cheaper than in the actual shop!!!! (£10 a week on food is plenty!)

Only go out on student nights, yes this maybe a bore but you want to save money.

Try not to end up having to buy things by yourself. In my hall we're all quite good, we buy things together, like washing up stuff, we all put 50p and itll last the week (washing up liquid etc.etc).

Um thats all I can think of for now.

I'm not sure why you've put your email address but maybe it's better not to on an open forum?
