Specsavers sunglasses

Hi guys, hope you are all ok?
Need a bit of advice about some sunglasses that I purchased from Specsavers.
Ok, so I purchased two pairs of glasses and a pair of normal frames and added prescription tinted lenses to make them sunglasses in June 2015.
All in all I paid £250 give or take a few quid. I have my receipt this purchase.
I've been using the sunglasses whilst driving and one of the arms seemed a bit loose so I went to my nearest branch today to get them tightened.
The lady that served me took them and then told me the screw wouldn't tighten and the hinge that connects the arm to the glasses frame is broken and can't be repaired. I asked if there was any solution, and she said I would have to buy a new set of frames. I can't afford to do that right now so I asked if they needed changing right away and she said the arm could fall off- which obviously means they are unuseable.
I came home and messaged specsavers over Facebook to query having to buy another set of frames as I believed they should really last longer.
They took my details and 10 mins later I received a phone call from the same lady in my local branch saying she could provide two solutions:
To give me 50 percent off a new set or-
To send them off to their labs to see if there is anything they can do to possibly repair them.
She suggested that as I was due an eye test, to come in for the test and to discuss these options because I asked if I could actually send them off and if they were not able to repair them- get the discount on new ones.
I do actually need these for driving as I wear glasses permanently and as it's beginning to get lighter and sunnier (yay) it's not ideal to not have them.
I do have the second pair or noma glasses, can I suggest to have the tinted lenses put into them if the sunglasses are sent off for repair?
Now I agreed to new eye test and discussion, as I thought that was reasonable, however do I really need to pay anything towards the glasses?
Perhaps I have been given a good offer by them, but I just wanted advice to ease my mind.
Much appreciated to those who respond!

They are broken, after nearly 2 years these things happen and it will not be the shops fault unless you can prove otherwise.
Any offers you get are better than nothing so yes you will have to pay towards them.0 -
Very true. I thought so.
They are still wearable, the arm to me is just a little loose but they are good for the moment.
Thank you for your comment:)0 -
Do they have spring hinges? My optician says that they are great because they fit well, but when they break they can't be repaired. I think Specsavers are being generous. The glasses are two years old and a lot of people strain hinges by always taking the glasses off by one of the arms.0

After comparing them to a picture on the internet I think they are Spring hinges. According to google many people have written how to fix them. I'm not sure how that helps me though.
The lady said the screw was just whizzing around and not tightening....am I wrong in saying the thread on the screw would have gone?
Making an un educated guess there.
Thank you for your reply!:)0 -
Sounds like its threaded.
You could get some clip on sunglasses gor a trmp fix though0 -

I am not sure. One of my spring hinges is loose and my optician has said they could break tomorrow or they could break in a year and that there is really no way to tell when it will be. He did warn me that when they break they will just fall apart in one big dramatic moment so I do need to make sure I am always carrying my old spare pair with me.
When I got my prescription sunglasses I was advised to get a solid pair without the spring hinges as they will be more robust (and they were cheaper). The woman in the optician was saying that as sunglasses are often bulkier anyway and aren't worn all the time it is a good idea.
I would be tempted by the 50% off I if were in your shoes depending on what they will cost.0 -
Thank you, I will look into that suggestion.
If it is threaded, can those screws not be replaced?
The lady advised on the phone she couldn't do anything personally but an option would be to send it to their labs which I don't mind doing.
Can you buy cheap perscription sunglasses? When I mean cheap I guess under 20 quid?0 -

Ahh right ok, that makes a lot of sense. Can I ask where you bought yours from please- the ones without Spring hinges?
Yes, I think you are right with the the 50% off really

Boots. They weren't under £20 though! I can't remember the price TBH. When I buy glasses I always ask them how robust certain styles are.0 -
£250 for two pairs seems expensive. I paid £130 for two varifocals, one tinted at Asda. Could have been cheaper but I went for their better option.0
