Marriage Tax Allowance

Please forgive me if this is in the wrong section...couldn't decide where to post it.

We got married on the 10th March and on the 13th I applied for the Marriage Tax Allowance as I earn a tiny amount (I'm mostly at home with the kids all the time).

My husband got his new tax code and it has an X after it which apparently means HMRC will look into the tax he's paid after 5th April.

Does the allowance start from the day you get married? or is it backdated to the previous April (before we were married)?

I'm assuming it's from the day we got married, but I cannot find any information at all other than people can claim for the previous year if they were married then (which really doesn't help me!)

Hope someone can help :)

It seems to be for full tax years, so they wont backdate it for the following April before you were married or give your a partial allowance for that tax year.

You become eligible at the point of marriage:

'You can get Marriage Allowance if all the following apply:
    • you’re married or in a civil partnership
    • you don’t earn anything or your income is under £11,000
    • your partner’s income is between £11,001 and £43,000'
    And:

'If you were eligible for Marriage Allowance in the 2015 to 2016 tax year, you can backdate your claim to 6 April 2015'

So by implication, it is given for the whole year in which you became eligible.
