Company won't give back $800 refund. Help!

Hi everyone, new to the forum, sorry if I'm posting out of place.

About a month ago I booked a flight that got oversold. Upon arriving, boarding attendant announced that $800 dollar visa gift cards were offered to anyone willing to take a later flight (same day, had to wait in the airport for 6 hours). I volunteered.

The attendant took my email address, said details will come into my email. After waiting a few days and no email, I call customer service. They say to wait 14 business days while the card is being delivered. I wait. No card, I call again. This time customer service says that in fact I was issued an $800 voucher that can only be used to book flights with the company (and is only valid for 1 year). I say that I was promised a visa gift card not sky miles, they say to call corporate customer care. I do but all options lead to automated messages. I file a complaint on their website explaining my situation--no response.

Now I am at a loss. I feel cheated and maltreated by the company. I just want the gift card like I was promised but I'm ready to do more if I have to. What can be done? Please help

Thank you!

How can you be refunded something which you haven't spent?

The only thing you have lost here is 6 hours from what I can see. If it comes down to it, it will be your word against theirs unless you got a document or written proof that they said Visa gift card.

What was the airline? We received an $800 visa card each when we volunteered to be bumped off a BA flight , but made sure we waited until we received it in our hands , that tok a few hours !. Search if anyone else on the flight was affected ( google) It does seem quite a high amount for a 6 hour delay , but wouldnt be surprised if harrassed staff were promising allsorts if they were under pressure .

I have often heard that amount offered (in the USA) if they are desperate to offload.

No idea how you go about getting it though

From what you say Dre42 I cant see how you were maltreated.

Were you treated cruelly or were you by any coerced using violence to take a later flight.

You have been messed around though.

Thank you all for your responses! I'm still talking to people and collecting info about what I can potentially do.

@Pelirocco: the airline company was Delta. And you guessed right--the staff did seem stressed which was one of the reasons I volunteered. While waiting the six hours I talked to a couple that also volunteered and they have gotten their refund details in the email by then. They did have a Sky miles account and I didn't which I think made a difference.

@DCFC79: maybe I'm not using the right words. I volunteered to help them in good faith and spent a frustrating month trying to get a hold of them to fulfill their end of the promise. It's just not what I initially signed up for.
