Car insurance claim

Does anyone know about car insurance claims? Whist trying to get my car out of a tight parking space in the road outside my house I lightly brushed against the front bumper of the vehicle behind. The owner of the vehicle is making a claim on my insurance but I quickly found out that his car had no insurance. This means that it was illegally parked and if it had not been illegally parked I could not have rubbed against it. My insurers tell me that the fact that the other vehicle was uninsured and breaking the law is irrelevant and as I damaged the vehicle they are responsible for the cost of repairs. This seems a strange situation but is it correct?
Thanks

You want to ask in the insurance section of the board. This is the complaints section.
However, it doesnt matter if the other car is in the wrong. It does not give you any right to drive into it and not pay for damage. Your insurers are correct. You may wish to inform the police of the incident (drop in, dont ring 999) telling them that you were involved in a minor accident with no injuries but have found the other party has no insurance. Or at least threaten the other owner you are going to do that unless they withdraw their claim against your insurance.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). In short, yes, it doesn't matter if a car has no insurance, VED, MOT, driver was drunk, 4 bald tyres and illegally tinted windows, if you were at fault, you have to pay. They have the choice of going through your insurance and it'll be on your record for x numbers of years though you may find it better to offer to pay the insurance company's costs and thus retain your NCB if it's a small scratch
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

The car could be illegally parked on double yellow or zig-zag lines, but you'd still be at fault if you drove into it.
The other party can claim on your insurance for this, leave the fact that he wasn't insured himself for the Police to handle separately.0 -
Many thanks for the replies that are clear and concise and explain the situation precisely.
