Increased Usage Since Switching

Hi :)
Wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I was previously with Eon and have recently switched to Octopus as they seemed to offer the better deal.
I went to add my meter reading to the website for this month and it seems extremely high. We used 2216 kwh with Eon between 10th December and 17th February (when we left & went to Octopus). According to the meter, we have now used 2328 kwh between 18th February and 20th March

We've had no new appliances (in fact have stopped using some including a freezer), we turn lights off, plugs at socket etc. We both work full time and are often out of the house 12 hours a day. All Octopus have said is that it is usual to use more electric in colder months?? I'm not sure where to go from here as I can't see how we've used that much. If anyone can give me any advice it would be much appreciated!

Hi HaroldtheDuck and welcome to the forums :)

Sorry you've decided to leave us, I just wanted to ask about when the account was with us, if that's ok.

Did we bill you to accurate reads? Was the final billed charged to the same read as the start read with your new supplier?

I know I can't help with the issue with the new supplier much :o, but wondered if it might have gone a bit further back.

    Thank you

If you haven't had the meter changed then it sounds like someone has misread the meter or that you might have had an estimated figure when you had the bill before your final one from Eon.

How often do you read your meter and do you keep records? Do you check bills against meter readings and get them corrected ?Have you checked that the closing reading with Eon is the same as the opening reading with Octopus? Have you made sure that there are no estimates in the last couple of bills from Eon? Did you give monthly readings to Eon and did they use them in your bills/statements?

Just guessing that you've used more or less is actually meaningless - you need actual meter readings - not estimates, from a couple of bills before and after you swapped suppliers you get a better picture of your consumption

And yes, most people use more energy in the winter than in the summer although 2000+ kwh in a month is very high, even if you are all electric.

  • Hi, thanks for the replies. Everything has been done on actual meter readings, no estimates; we received a refund from Eon after we left. I know people use more energy in winter but in the last month we have used less but the meter is giving out this high reading. Am just confused as it seems the meter is going haywire since we switched, we've never had this before.

I will check that the end/start readings are the same. Thanks again :)
  • Hi Helena, we had 12 month contract with Eon that finished 17th February this year :)

This does look like a mis read of the meter.

Do you have the older dial type which are very easy to misread or a more modern digital ?

As matelodave has said double check your readings against the bills.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • It's a digital Landis & Gyr single phase meter. I will go through and see if it's possible that something could be draining the power. Thanks for your replies.

It's the same leccy that come down the wires and if you've got the same meter then you've done something - either misread the meter or left someting switched on.

We are all electric an the most we've ever used in a month is 1500kwh, but there was snow on the ground and the temperatures dropped very low so it was expected
