Yeah, sorry for not being clear. Insurers cynicsm says a coat is never a coat, it's a leather jacket. Sunglasses are never £10 from Boots but £300 Oakley or Police. A handbag is never a market stall jobbie but one from Prada or Gucci.

They see so many optimistic / fraudulent claims like this and this is why when people claim to have such items they ask to see receipts as proof.

I can only agree with you on this one! I see alot of lists of items taken/lost/damaged etc and (I'm not joking) I have never seen something as listed as bought from Ikea, argos, Tescos or Asda (you know, where everybody buys their cheap everyday cutlery, plates and pans). It is naturally all from John Lewis, Debenhams or other designer places. And all with no proof of purchase. It is really really stange to get people with no money at all, arrears up to their eyeballs with more fine china than the queen!

With regards to cloths, the reason we look carefully at lists is that it can aid in the refusal of a claim where we are certain it is bent but cannot prove it. The case law set in the 80's stated that if one part of a claim is fraudulent, the entire claim is fraudulent. This means that if your house burns down, you claim you have an armani suit, and we find out you didnt and lied, we can (and have) void a claim and policy.

Like many people I have a mixture of items.

I wouldn't both putting in a claim for the really cheap stuff from a market stall. To be honest if a pair of cheap glasses or jeans have been worn for a few years then they probably have very little residual value anyway.

Would this not explain to some extent what you are seeing
i.e. people not bothering to claim for the cheap stuff.

If I have a set of jewelry that I bought for £10 from a market stall that I've had for 5 years then it's worth practically nothing.

I'm sure there is soem fraud as well though.

I think it would be helpful if insurers made it clear that receipts could be kept, as whilst it makes perfefct sense, a lot of people probably don't think of it from the insurers point of view when they are chucking out their receipts.

Most travel insurers won't cover that value of clothing and the single article limit will prohibit cover for the laptop.

If I were the OP and I wanted to take all that stuff and the kitchen sink I would cover the stuff all-risks under their contents Policy and then buy a travel policy with no luggage cover.
