Unlike European car hire, renting a vehicle in the US via a UK website often provides full insurance, so you may need nothing additional. You can make sure when booking, and get more info by searching or posting on the Flights Currency and Car Hire sub-board.

Any application for credit affects credit ratings but if you are only talking 2 or 3 searches in 6 months the impact is negligible

icarhireinsurance is the one that is best known, and you can get some 20% cashback through Topcashback or any of the other cashback sites reducing the cost further.
