Can obtain credit cards but not a Standard Bank Account

Seems a bit odd..credit history used to be pretty dire, late payments and ccj"s etc, last couple of years its now managed in a healthy way and mortgage is paid on time and credit cards all paid on time and well with in limits.
Banked with Natwest for six years now and only have a basic account..cant or wont upgrade to a standard account, don't want nor need overdraft nor cheque book...just a standard account.
Held Nationwide account for years and held a dormant saving account for many years, recently started using Nationwide again but have left all direct debits with Natwest and income goes into that account.
Im wondering if any banks are less strict that others..if that makes sense, appreciate all have there own credit scoring internally...just wondering if say Co-op was more lenient than say TSB or Barclays etc.:(

What do your credit reports show about you?
If you have no defaults just a few late payment markers then some banks will offer you a standard account - just don't ask for an immediate overdraft facility.
Can I ask you just one question?
If you don't need an overdraft or a cheque book what will a standard bank account give you that a basic one does not?0 -
Remember a bank you have a long standing relationship with knows things about you that your credit file won't show.0

Nothing overly exciting..but as i bank with Natwest id like to opt in for the % on the direct debit deal they have.
Also when a Mortgage as mentioned by an advisor they asked why i hadnt upgraded to a full fat account as opposed a skimmed version.
I got the impression the standard bank account would be looked at more favourably than a basic account.
Credit report score which im aware means very little is still poor but getting better slowly...Positives are 10 and Negatives 0 on clearscore.
Defaults are a few years old now..everything else is paid on time...seems odd.
Maybe a face to face chat with advisor in Branch would be better than automated online application..?0
