recommend dog chews for me!

My dog doesn't have much in the way of teeth. Years of neglect before I got her. I want to preserve what she has. She is on soft foods but I'm struggling to find quality soft treats. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Personally, I don't think you'll enjoy the dog chews that much, maybe leave them for the dog... :P

In terms of dental health, I'd try to avoid anything full of sugars or carbs - avoid stuff like Bonios, Dentastix, Jumbones, etc. which are full of rubbish. I would aim for natural treats - I'd normally recommend something like pizzle sticks or pigs/cows ears but if they're a bit tough for her, I'd maybe go for dried tripe sticks (they do need some crunching but I've heard the gums harden in dogs lacking teeth). You could maybe try some dehydrated meats (the online shop Zooplus sell loads), perhaps adding a little bit of water to soften. If she's still got some teeth then you may find she manages the chewier things better than you think though.

If you're after little tidbit type treats then something like the Natures Menu little treats could work well - they're a bit like a slighty tougher (but still soft) little sausage type consistancy.

You may want to consider an overall diet change for dental health too if you haven't already - again, avoiding the grains etc. that will coat the teeth, I personally recommend raw feeding but I know it's not for everyone.

Thanks. Although some do a little tempting.

I'll give the Natures Menus treats a shot and see how she gets on with them.
  • Processed dog chews are mainly filled with wheat or grain which is not healthy for a dog.

Stick with fresh meat pieces or make your own doggy treats so you know what's in them using wholesome fresh ingredients, and no grains!

I used to buy dental sticks for my hounds but my vet was concerned about their weight so I now give them dehydrated meat chews.

I'm mean, they only get one when I come back from shopping. They are small elderly dogs so I have to be careful as to how much I give them. That and the fact they have dodgy bowels.

It's easy to make your own liver cake and sardine biscuits which you can do a job lot of and freeze. Just be careful with how much liver as it can give them the runs.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
