No they can't, the estate is effectively insolvent as it does not have sufficient assets to pay the funeral costs, which have priority over any dept owed bty the deceased. If there are no assets within the estate debts die with the debtor, they cannot be passed to the decendants..

Personally I would simply hand over the keys with a letter stating that your mother's estate is insolvent, and that you are not handling the estate so they can do whatever they like with the furniture. You won't get any of the deposits back, but you will save yourself a lot wasted time, effort and stress.

So would I be able to use the money in her bank for the funeral? Could I post the keys as I am not local and going back to my home on Monday. X

Yes you can, have you already made the arrangements? If you have not done that yet and if paying is financially difficult for you, then you should consider getting the local authority to step in and arrange it.

If you are posting the keys back I would do it by special delivery.

I have arranged it already and it will be difficult but not impossible.

I will formulate a letter. Thank you :)

See if you qualify for a funeral grant.

Could I also leave the key with a neighbour? And let the landlord know. They mentioned doing gas meter readings.. Do I really have too? It's a job I'd rather not do.

well your mum's estate will probably owe the gas/electric companies for utilities. But that's a matter between the utility companies and the Estate.

Not you. Or the landlord. Yes it would be sensible to do a meter reading so the LL takes on responsibility from that reading, but again it's not really your responsibility.

Council tax too will need informing.

But if you're not going to act as Administrator of the Estate (which seems pointless) then.... not your job.

How do I contact the council tax?

Mum was on card meters.. Does that matter?

I've found a letter template to creditors when there's nothing in the estate.
Just want to move forward to grieve now.

I would want proof that they have the keys, so would use SD.

As for the meter readings, that's a tricky one as when I did this when my mum moved into care last year they actually owed her some money, but you have no obligation to do this, again you can simple walk away from it. If as more likely her account is in debt because we have just gone through the expensive fuel months, then the gas company will simply have to write it off.

All the utilities will end up getting sorted with when new tenants move in.

Card meters are pre payment so there will be no dept associated with that.

Hopefully you can use the tell us one service to inform the council, and relevant gov depts like the DWP.

It's so much easier than I thought. Thank you.
