Car Insurance dilemma

Hello,

I have a car which is parked on it's own car park space. I'm going to be abroad for 3 months which the insurance runs out just before i leave.

What should i do, is it worth renewing my car insurance or wait until i come back, i would imagine i would need to declare it as SORN? I could also park it in my parent's garage if that's an option.

Also i'm hiring a car when i'm abroad would my car insurance cover me for that if i do renew?

Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks in adavance.

You would probably be ok to reinsure the car when you comeback, check with your insurance company how long a break they give from a policy ending to a new one being taken out to maintain your no claims, most will give you a year. That said if its valuable then it may well be worth insuring it before you go incase of theft, nothing attracts thieving scum like a car parked up.

You would need to sorn it unless the car tax is valid throughout the period you are away. If it was out of tax for only 1 or 2 weeks i would tend to not bother as long as it is parked off road whilst out of tax.

Whoever you hire a car of abroad should be providing you with the proper insurance as part of the hire charge.

Yes, you must sorn your car if you leave it uninsured (irrespective of whether it is taxed! Though sorning it will get you a tax refund)

(Most insurers will accept NCD up to 2 years old)

It's highly unlikely your insurer will cover a hire car you use abroad as part of your policy
