I have given up trying to make sense of insurance prices. I have just come to terms with the fact that their black-box algorithms may sort of make sense at aggregate levels, but can and do spit out completely nonsensical results on an individual basis.

Last year my insurer quoted £400 to renew my bike insurance. From their website I obtained a quote of £280, so I bought that because it was the cheapest I managed to find. This year they sent me a renewal letter quoting £180 for renewal (and incorrectly reporting that last year’s price was £330 instead of £280, ie trying to make me believe they were saving me more money than they actually were). I went on their website… and this time the website quoted £600! £180 was the cheapest price I could find so I accepted that. Nonsensical. Totally nonsensical. I can understand the “lazy tax” whereby an automated renewal is more expensive, but I would have never imagined an automated renewal to be more than 2x cheaper than the price quoted by the same insurer.
  • Same thing happened to me last year, but not on renewal.

I called hastings and went ahead with a quote for a new car I'd bought, the women on the phone told me unfortunately hastings were unable to quote me at all.

She gave no reason, basically just stuttered and couldn't explain.

I went onto gocompare.com and found hastings, I chose their premier package, added a few extras on and paid.

I recieved all documentation and am renewing with them on the 12th of June (my insurance has gone up by nearly £200 by the way ) so I hope what's happened to you doesn't happen to me!!
