Sky - TV only

Hi,
Anyone know how much I should look to pay for Sky - TV only please ? (no BroadBand / No phoneline) - She gets a "deal" from BT for her phone so I don't want to stop that.
Basic TV Package for my mum - she's 83 (no use for broadband).
She currently has "original" Sky bundle for UK Gold etc.
She has an extra box upstairs - both archaic - Box is an old white Sky+ box - (She has no "catch-up" as she has no line/broadband)
She currently pays £27.85 and this is supposed to be a discounted rate which I pleaded for this time last year!
It sounds a bit expensive when all she's getting is her TV.
When this discounted rate runs out I'd like to be armed with ideas/suggestions when I call Sky for her again.

  • Considering you can get a Sky Q box + The Original TV package + £75 reward for £22 I'd say she's overpaying there.

If she's out of contract I'd call them and explain who it's for and what they watch and see if you can get that way down. You could always schedule a cancellation (you can stop it at anytime) and see what offers appear. 60% off the full price should be easily achievable.

Thanks for that - I wondered what the deals were - She's had Sky for years - hence the old white skybox - I even thought of asking for an updated box (no point getting Q - but just a new plus box) if nothing else

The reason she is paying so much is because she's on a non standard offering which will not attract the usual discounts. It may be cheaper for her to get broadband, even if she doesn't use it. I pay £18.80 a month for BB + the original TV package.

Also is she paying for multiroom? If so get her a magic eye setup so she doesn't need this. She doesn't need the functions of a second box if she lives alone.

If she's out of contract it should be very easy to get a new box. If they say no say you'll disconnect if not.

Doubt you'll get a HD+ box from Sky anymore. You could of course buy one from Amazon for instance but they're about £150 plus so the Q box is better value even if she'd never own it. If she really doesn't want to lose the UK Gold channel and it's siblings then her choices are limited. I'd speak to Sky (is she out of contract?).

I missed the fact that she may be on multiroom, that's a good point.

Sky Original is £22 full price ,so the very most I'd pay is £11. Actually,I wouldn't pay that, as I'd just use Freeview or Freesat and a PVR (for recording, pause etc).

I have Boxed Sets and Cinema, but only because it's on offer and I effectively pay less than £6 /month. This offer came after cancelling and allowing the service to go off.

You can but cheap HD+ boxes from Ebay (local, as collecting in person cuts the price) or Gumtree.

Anyone know - Would the newer HD+ boxes from EBay work if simply swapped & plugged in ? or would we need to get an engineer to map/tune them in ?

Why is she with Sky? Surely she would be better off getting a Humax box and paying no subscription???

No engineer visit would be required, but her viewing card would need to be paired with the "new" box. This could be done over the 'phone.

Unless GOLD channel is very important, I think a Freesat option might be better explored. Humax decoders aren't expensive and there would be no need to pay a subscription at all.
