Zenith, 1st Central or Hastings. Which should I choose?

My renewal quote from the AA arrived and it's a lot higher than I hoped. The actual insurer is Zenith. I've got quotes through the meerkat etc, and the only cheaper ones are from 1st Central and Hastings direct. Are these all as bad as each other? Any advice appreciated.

If you think that's bad, make sure you read the 1st Central thread!

I was with 1st Central a few years ago but left after reading that thread here! However, I've also read that Zenith are equally dreadful so now I'm starting to wonder if these ones are all as bad as each other.
  • All are low rent type outfits with dubious levels of service / bit of a gamble. It's a bit like would sir like aids, ebola or cancer?

The other quotes are all over £100 more. I've no idea why. I've never made a claim in my life, and have 10 years NCB, no points/convictions or anything like that. I'm not young either. I guess the Volkswagen Up is just an expensive car to insure for some reason. The corsa was dirt cheap to insure.

I've just got a quote from Direct Line for not a huge amount more. Are they any better than the ones above?

Far better I'd say. I've not had to claim, but have found them very good to deal with and no admin charge on a change of vehicle this year - in fact I got a small refund.
  • Defo better than the previous incumbants mentioned.
