Traffic lights help
Hi people, need some advice on traffic lights , just went past a red, orange, green ,left turn green traffic light.
It was left turn green only however onwards was red probably because from the road i was turning into had cars turning right, then the main green light came on for us so the cars continued, the left turn after a while disapeard but the main green was still on, my question is was i allowed to turn?after it has disappeard? I did and another two cars did but had another time were someone infront stopped
Help please

Sorry, you DO have a driving licence don't you? You really should not have to be asking this question. Pop to the shops and buy a copy of the Highway Code - then READ it.0

Ignore the rude person above, Its fine to ask questions yes you were allowed to turn, The filter is turn only but the green light is straight on and turn0 -
Thanks, i have a full uk car driving license for 4 years now and three years for motorbikes (full) passed both tests first time.
No accidents , no fines, i think im a good driver hehe, you learn something new everyday i was sure you could turn but sometimes other ppl cause you to think if your right or not.

After a while you do things automatically, without thinking so much, and then something happens that makes you question it, right? It's always good to ask! This is what the highway code says:
A GREEN ARROW may be provided in addition to the full green signal if movement in a certain direction is allowed before or after the full green phase. If the way is clear you may go but only in the direction shown by the arrow. You may do this whatever other lights may be showing.
I use a similar junction on a regular basis. There's a green arrow for turning right, while the oncoming traffic waits at a red light. That's when I'm free to turn. Then the full green comes on, and the oncoming traffic starts moving. So then I'm still free to go but only when it's safe to do so i.e. when there's a break in the oncoming traffic.0 -
I love this forum, always quick and understandable info.
Thanks bat and others0 -

The bit about traffic lights is https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/light-signals-controlling-traffic
Most people have it down pat by about their second driving lesson. It's not very hard.aleks1244 wrote:It was left turn green only however onwards was red probably because from the road i was turning into had cars turning right, then the main green light came on for us so the cars continued, the left turn after a while disapeard but the main green was still on, my question is was i allowed to turn?after it has disappeard? It's not very easy to follow what you're actually asking, but at a guess...
Are you allowed to turn left where there's a filter light, but that filter light is not illuminated while the main light is green?
Yes, you are. A non-arrow green means every direction can go. A green arrow means only that direction can go. If the main light was ahead-only, it'd be a straight-on arrow.
So for...
... you need to wait for the left arrow to turn left.
But for...
...you don't.0
